What’s Ahead for the Centralina Region: Regional Data Trends

Centralina Regional Council focuses on addressing the needs of member communities in our nine-county area and working collaboratively on issues that impact our region, examining national, state and local trends impacting our member governments and identifying their potential impacts to determine best practices for meeting needs and addressing challenges. This brief dives into current regional trends and how they are currently being addressed by Centralina, including how the Centralina Economic Development District (CEDD) are working to support local economic development policy and adding to the region’s economic diversity.

Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy 2023-2028

In 2022, the Centralina Economic Development District Board of Directors worked in partnership with Centralina Regional Council, the CEDS Steering Committee and a range of stakeholders to assess the region’s current economic conditions and develop a strategy to build on existing assets while addressing both short-term shocks and structural challenges to the economy. These findings were the building blocks of the 2023 – 2028 Prosperity for All CEDS, a five-year locally based, regionally driven economic development strategy to generate good jobs, diversify the economy and spur economic growth.

Prosperity Profile Technical Report (CEDS 2023-2028, Appendix A-C)

The Prosperity Profile creates a baseline set of metrics for the nine-county Centralina region to assess the state of equity. The Prosperity Profile directly informs the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy and will also be used long-term to monitor the region’s progress on equity.

Target Cluster Opportunity Analysis 2022: AI / Workforce Automation Risk Assessment (CEDS 2017-2022, Appendix C)

This supplemental section, AI/Workforce Automation Risk Assessment, identifies those occupations that are most at risk for automation in the Centralina Region. The assessment will also highlight the risks to occupations for each of the target industry clusters, showing which occupations are most at-risk as well as least at risk of automation. A relative comparison of automation risk of the Charlotte metro against other metros is also included. In addition, we begin with an overview of “AI”, or Artificial Intelligence and its current and future impacts on the economy and Centralina’s target industry clusters. This project was funded by the U.S. Economic Development Administration for a COVID-19 Economic Recovery Planning and Technical Assistance Grant under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

Supply Chain Survey Results 2021 (CEDS 2017-2022, Appendix B)

The Centralina Regional Council and the Centralina Economic Development District are conducting an Industry Cluster Update as a part of an ongoing regional economic development strategy coordination. To inform this report, The Charlotte Regional Business Alliance conducted and compiled this 2021 Supply Chain Survey to better understand how the pandemic has impacted supply chains and was funded by an Economic Development Administration CARES Act Recovery Assistance Addendum Partnership Planning grant.

Target Cluster Opportunity Analysis 2021 (CEDS 2017-2022, Appendix A)

The Centralina Economic Development District hired EY’s Economic Development Advisory Services team to assist with the development of this “Centralina Target Cluster Opportunity Analysis.” EY was tasked with evaluating the performance of the region’s existing target industries and clusters, identify county-level trends, show how disruptors and drivers are affecting industry clusters, and update the region’s target clusters. In addition, an analysis of supply chains included a survey of employers across the region, and an examination of AI/automation impacts on workforce was included. Ultimately, this analysis will inform the region’s upcoming Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy update in 2022.
